Spinalonga is a small island near Elounda in East Crete . It was an important Venetian fortress from 1903 became Leper . Spinalonga is known as the “Island of Lepers ” since there isolated lepers from Crete and the rest of Greece until 1957 . Spinalonga Today is the most visited archaeological site in Crete after Knossos .
